Driven by global warming and other threats such as international trade and deforestation, intensifying weather events are causing certain ranges to perish at worrying speeds, pushing us to re-think how we manage forests.

1 - A world of forests

Forests are complex and rich ecosystems that cover vast areas of the world. They form habitats for many animal, plant and microbial species that interconnect with one another.

2 - Forests under fire

Since their first appearance 370 million years ago, forest ecosystems have faced a host of natural disturbances caused by weather or living organisms. Add to that human activities, and the resilience of forests is being put to the test.

3 - Adaptation: ideas for action

Current global change is unprecedented on a human scale, both in terms of speed and intensity, and makes the future of forests as we know them uncertain. In order to help public decision-makers, professionals and landowners to cope with this increased risk, INRAE has been testing different sustainable management methods for several decades in partnership with several public and private stakeholders.

4 - Public policy for private forests

On a global scale, Europe is an exception: 60% of its forests are privately owned, in comparison to 30% in America and Asia. Moreover, this rate reaches 75% in France. With forests at the heart of multiple challenges, these figures are crucial to the success of public policies for the management of these socio-ecosystems. How do tree stands stand in France?
